Meet the Artist

Meet Stefanie A. Satterfield, the artist behind Art.bySAS—because with initials like SAS, how could they not be use?

Originally from California, Stefanie moved to Spartanburg, SC at the age of nine, where her passion shifted from dance to art. She later earned a BA in Studio Art with a minor in Arts Management from the College of Charleston (Charleston University to be technical) before moving to New York City. While she loved the city's energy, she knew it wasn’t her forever home. After nearly seven years, she relocated to Charlotte in July 2019, embracing a major shift from a corporate retail career to life as a teaching artist—just before the world was turned upside down by the pandemic.

Stefanie has a hyper focus on detail, striving to capture the essence of each subject in all its beauty. Her work is created with the intention of evoking everlasting happiness, inspired by her deep appreciation for the natural world around her. The vibrant hues and intricate structures of flowers, the ever-changing skies with their breathtaking sunsets, and the people (and their fur babies) that make up her community all fuel her creativity.

While she enjoys working in various mediums, Stefanie thrives in ceramics, where she transforms clay into modern, functional wares and delicate flowers —encapsulating nature’s beauty in each piece. Every item is hand-built using one, or a combination of the three traditional techniques: pinch pots, coils, and slabs.

Stefanie primarily works with earthen red or white stoneware, finishing her pieces with striking, complementary glazes. She appreciates clean, simple lines and intentionally designs her work with thoughtful sizing and smooth, comfortable handles, ensuring her mugs feel as good as they look. While she loves that her pieces are used every day, she also enjoys always creating whimsical seasonal items, like her popular ghost luminaries and gnomes.

Her decorative flowers have evolved over the years, with a goal of making them so lifelike they might be mistaken for fresh blooms. Her flower-making journey began with wall flowers—large, single blooms designed for wall or tabletop display. This led to the creation of her forever flowers, inspired by the experience of picking flowers at a shop and curating a custom bouquet. There smaller individual blooms are set on covered metal stems, often paired with her simple bud vases, intentionally designed to mimic the look of a flower stem while beautifully showcasing the flowers they hold.

Originally, Stefanie sculpted her wall flowers from stoneware, but after experimenting with porcelain, she found she could make them even more delicate and lifelike. Each petal is individually formed with precision and finished in rich glazes in natural hues. While she initially created clay stems and used underglazes and glazes for her forever flowers, she has since developed her own hand-mixed colored porcelain, allowing them to remain unglazed. This technique highlights the natural beauty of her custom hues, creating a soft, organic aesthetic. She also now sets the blooms on a covered metal stem allowing for less fragility and more arranging options.
